AI DJ is learning new languages. What exactly does this mean?
Spotify has officially announced the expansion of its interactive AI DJ feature to French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Along with the new languages comes expansion into eight additional markets: Austria, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, South Korea, and Switzerland.
The AI DJ feature was first introduced in February 2023 as a beta version for premium users in North America. Since then, it has undergone a significant transformation. From originally being a passive commentator that inserted interesting facts about artists and recommendations between songs, it has evolved into a fully conversational music assistant. Users can now request specific songs, change the mood of a playlist, switch genres, or ask for new music recommendations based on the current context via voice or text.
Why are the new languages so important?
According to the latest figures, Spotify has 761 million monthly active users, of which 293 million are paying subscribers. Although English remains the global language of music, most listeners prefer to interact in their native language. Spotify understands this — each new language version of AI DJ comes with its own persona and name that respects local culture and musical customs.
For illustration: the Brazilian AI DJ will not only speak Portuguese but will also reflect the country's rich musical tradition from bossa nova to modern funk carioca. The German version, in turn, may emphasize the Berlin electronic scene as well as classic schlager. This approach — localizing not only the language but also the cultural context — is what sets Spotify apart from generic playlist algorithms.
How does AI DJ actually work?
AI DJ combines several artificial intelligence technologies into one experience. The foundation is generative AI for creating spoken commentary, personalization algorithms for selecting music based on listening history, and speech-to-text and text-to-speech systems for voice interaction.
In practice, it works like this: the user opens the AI DJ feature and instead of a static playlist hears dynamic commentary: "I know you've been listening to a lot of Czech indie rock lately. How about trying the new album from…" And if the suggestion doesn't suit the user, they can simply say "play something else" or "I want a happier mood." AI DJ responds in real time and adjusts the selection.
The technology behind it relies on large language models (LLMs) similar to those powering ChatGPT or Claude. However, Spotify trains these models on its own data about musical preferences and cultural contexts, giving it an advantage over general AI assistants.
What does this mean for Czech users?
For Czech Spotify listeners, this news is mixed. On the one hand, it is positive that Spotify is actively investing in AI features and expanding them globally. The Czech Republic is an important market for Spotify — the service has been available here since 2012 and is among the most popular streaming platforms. On the other hand, Czech is still missing among the new languages.
AI DJ in Czech would face several challenges. Czech is a complex language with rich morphology and a relatively small language corpus compared to English or Spanish. Developing a quality text-to-speech system and speech understanding in Czech requires greater investment. However, as Spotify expands into Central and Eastern Europe, Czech could be on the priority list in future waves of expansion.
For now, Czech users can use AI DJ in English if they have a premium subscription. The feature is available in the Spotify app on both iOS and Android but requires activation in settings.
Broader context: Spotify vs. competition in AI
The expansion of AI DJ is not an isolated step. In recent months, Spotify has been intensively working on integrating AI across the entire platform. In addition to AI DJ, it is testing prompt-driven playlist creation, where a user might write, for example, "songs for an evening run along the Vltava" and the AI generates a corresponding selection. Similar features are offered by YouTube Music and Apple Music, but Spotify has an advantage in personalization thanks to its huge database of listening habits.
The competition, however, is not sleeping. In 2025, Apple Music introduced the Apple Music Intelligence feature, which uses Apple Silicon chips for local analysis of music preferences. YouTube Music, in turn, is betting on integration with Google Gemini for intelligent search. Spotify, however, maintains its lead precisely thanks to AI DJ — as the only major player, it offers a conversational music guide, not just smarter search.
EU regulation and AI ethics in streaming
The expansion of AI features comes at a time when the European Union is tightening regulation of artificial intelligence. The AI Act, which came into force in 2024, requires transparency for algorithmic recommendations. For Spotify, this means it must clearly explain to users why AI DJ recommends certain music and provide the ability to influence the algorithm.
Spotify already faces criticism in the EU for insufficient transparency regarding payments to artists. With the arrival of AI DJ, the question of copyright for AI-generated commentary is added. If AI DJ quotes song lyrics or uses information about artists, Spotify must ensure that copyright is not being infringed. For the Czech market, which falls under EU jurisdiction, this means that any future Czech version of AI DJ will have to meet these regulatory requirements.
Where is Spotify heading?
According to available information, Spotify plans to further expand AI DJ to additional Asian and European markets. The priority is likely Japan and the Nordic countries. With 75+ countries under its belt, it is clear that Spotify's ambition is to make AI DJ a global standard for music streaming, not just a premium toy for English-speaking markets.
For investors, this step is a signal that Spotify sees the future in significant differentiation through AI, not just in a race for the number of licensed tracks. With 761 million users and growing competition, features like AI DJ may be what decides whether a user stays with Spotify or switches to Apple Music or YouTube Music.
Is AI DJ available for free Spotify users?
No, the AI DJ feature is exclusively for Spotify Premium subscribers. Free users have access to basic personalized playlists like Discover Weekly or Release Radar, but the interactive music guide requires a premium subscription.
When could a Czech version of AI DJ arrive?
Spotify has not officially announced any timeline for Czech language support. Given the complexity of the Czech language and the relatively small market compared to Germany or France, it can be expected that Czech will come only in a later phase of global expansion, likely within a 1–2 year horizon.
How does AI DJ differ from regular recommendations in Spotify?
While regular recommendations in Spotify work on the principle of algorithmic selection based on listening history, AI DJ is interactive. It allows voice or text communication, responds to mood changes in real time, and creates spoken commentary between songs. It is a dynamic guide, not a static list of tracks.
