What the art department actually built
Showrunner Terry Matalas has confirmed that generative AI played no part in the visual production of the series. Production designer Will Hughes-Jones and his crew instead reproduced by hand the exact artefacts we have all learned to associate with image and video models: geometry that cannot exist, furniture fused into architecture, and objects duplicated in illogical clusters.
The conceit is not a throwaway gag. Vision Quest is set roughly one year after the finale of WandaVision, and the story moves inside White Vision's own mind — visualised as a mansion inhabited by the MCU's artificial intelligences, as he searches for an emotional identity. A mindscape should look like something assembled from partial data. The cheap way to signal that in 2026 would have been to generate it. The crew did the opposite, and that choice is now the story.
"AI slop" has quietly become a visual vocabulary
Think about how quickly we learned to spot the tells. Hands with six fingers. Shadows that point the wrong way. Text on signage that dissolves into ornament. Reflections that do not match the room. And most of all: repetition without reason — the same face, the same sunflower, the same bowl of fruit, stamped across a frame as if the model had run out of ideas and started copy-pasting.
Those tells are now familiar enough to be quoted. It is the same cultural move film crews made with VHS artefacts, CRT scanlines and lens flares: once a technology's failure modes become recognisable, they become a style you can request from an art department. The difference here is the irony — the "errors" are the most meticulously planned objects on set. A chair that is 40 cm into a wall has to be fabricated, rigged, lit and matched across takes. A model produces one on demand and forgets how it did it.
Why "0% AI" is a compliance position in Europe, not just marketing
Here is where the European reader should pay attention. Under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, providers of generative systems have to mark synthetic outputs in a machine-readable way, and deployers who publish deepfakes or AI-generated content have to disclose it. As of 2 August 2026, those transparency duties and the accompanying deployer requirements are no longer a voluntary pledge — they are binding, enforced by the European AI Office and national competent authorities.
The practical upshot for a studio, a broadcaster or a pan-European streaming service is straightforward. Publish AI-generated frames without disclosure and you carry compliance risk, plus the reputational risk of being caught by viewers who cannot reliably tell the difference anyway. Publish human-authored work and you do not trigger those obligations at all — though a clean paper trail of who made what, and how, is starting to look less like bureaucracy and more like insurance. That is the reason provenance standards such as C2PA Content Credentials keep showing up in production pipelines.
We follow the regulatory side of generative media across the rest of the magazine, and this case is a neat illustration of the trend: AI is becoming something you have to declare, which means not using it is becoming something you can advertise. Marvel has not framed the series that way publicly, but a European distributor could legitimately do so.
The labour question nobody is pricing
European crews would be doing this work. The Czech Republic and Hungary host a substantial share of Hollywood's European shoots, and the art departments, prop shops and set-builders clustered around them are exactly the people who fabricate a banister that hangs in mid-air. When a production decides to hand-build machine-looking errors, the money flows to those workshops rather than to inference compute. That is a real, if modest, industrial consequence — and one that will keep showing up as long as disclosure rules make "made by humans" a checkable claim.
Whether that labour premium holds is another matter. Per-frame generation keeps getting cheaper; a set carpenter does not. The interesting variable is not capability but provenance: if audiences and regulators demand to know what was generated, the cost of not generating it becomes a line item someone has to justify.
The six minds inside Vision's head
The series casts Vision's internal world as a reunion of the MCU's synthetic characters — six of them, each a recognisable voice rather than a visual effect:

That is a lot of artificial intelligence in a show that used none of it. The irony is deliberate enough that you have to assume someone in the marketing department is enjoying it.
What is actually confirmed
Stick to what is verifiable: zero generative AI in visual production, per Matalas; hand-crafted AI-style visual errors per the production team; a premiere on Disney+ scheduled for 14 October 2026; a story set about a year after WandaVision. Can I tell a hand-made "AI error" from a real one?
Usually not from a single frame — and that is the point. The reliable difference is consistency and provenance. Human-built errors stay identical across takes and camera angles, because they are physical objects on a set; generated errors tend to drift between shots. Metadata such as C2PA Content Credentials, where present, is a stronger signal than eyeballing the image.
Does the EU AI Act require studios to label AI scenes in films and series?

Is a fully AI-generated series even possible in Europe today?
