Amazon Tests SMS Shopping Agent in the US, Sponsored Ads Included

Amazon has started texting US shoppers. An invite-only group can message a contact called "Alexa Shopping" to reorder a repeat purchase, send a photo of ingredients and ask what can be made from them, or set a trigger that buys when the price drops. Sponsored products appear inside those answers. Europe is not on the list.

How the text agent works

Opted-in customers get a contact saved as Alexa Shopping in their messaging app. From there they type requests in ordinary language: reorder the coffee, check where a parcel is, ask the agent to watch an item and buy it once the price hits a set level. Photos work as input too. Amazon's examples include a shot of recipe ingredients and a picture of an outfit a customer wants to match.

The agent keeps one year of price history to judge whether a drop is real. Conversations started over SMS sync back to the Amazon app, Amazon.com and Alexa-enabled devices, so a thread does not die when the phone is put down. The rollout began with the invite-only group in the United States, and Amazon says it plans to widen the test to millions of customers.

The numbers Amazon disclosed

More than 400 million customers used Alexa for Shopping in the twelve months preceding Amazon's November 6, 2026 announcement, according to the company. Use of its agentic capabilities has grown more than eightfold since the start of 2026. Amazon also reports that customers who use the assistant spend 50% more than those who do not.

That last figure deserves care. Amazon has not published a baseline, a control group or a time window for the comparison. People who ask an AI assistant to shop for them may simply be people who shop a lot. The eightfold growth number has the same shape: it measures a rise from a starting point Amazon chose.

Advertising is where the effect becomes visible in the accounts. Amazon's advertising services brought in $19.64 billion in Q3 2026, up 11% year on year and about 9.7% of the company's $201.9 billion in quarterly sales. Annualised, that is roughly $78.6 billion from ads alone, against $68.6 billion for the whole of 2025.

Sponsored products inside the answers

The recommendations the agent sends over text can carry Sponsored Product placements, as GeekWire reported. Advertisers are not being charged extra for the placement during this phase. Transactions the agent completes on its own are described as ad-free, which suggests the sponsorship attaches to suggestions rather than to a checkout the customer did not ask for.

What Amazon has not explained is how a sponsored item is ranked against an organic one inside a text thread, or how clearly the sponsorship is marked in the message itself. Under the EU's Digital Services Act, Amazon is designated a very large online platform and must label advertising and give users information about why they are seeing an ad. A chat window is a harder place to fit that label than a search results page.

Amazon blocked rival agents first

In September 2026 Amazon cut off Meta's shopping agent Muse, citing unauthorised access and the way customer data was stored. A month earlier, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals overturned an injunction Amazon had won against Perplexity's shopping agent Comet. Amazon decides which outside agents may read its product pages, and it is now running one of its own.

The competition is moving into messaging at the same time: DoorDash added text-based ordering in September 2026. On Amazon's Q3 earnings call, CEO Andy Jassy described Alexa for Shopping as the company's central buying agent, a position set against general-purpose assistants that live outside Amazon.

Not available in the EU

Nothing in the announcement covers Europe. The test is US-only, there is no published date for an EU version and no EUR pricing to quote because there is nothing to buy. For a European reader the practical answer today is short: you cannot use it.

If Amazon brings it over, two rule sets apply that did not bite in the same way a year ago. Article 50 of the AI Act has been enforceable since 2 August 2026, so a conversational agent has to tell users they are dealing with an AI system, and generated content has to carry machine-readable marking. On the data side, price tracking and auto-buy triggers turn idle browsing into a stored record of purchase intent. GDPR purpose limitation and data minimisation apply to that record, and a new SMS channel needs its own consent basis rather than inheriting one from the app.

Consumer law differs as well. EU shoppers keep a 14-day right of withdrawal on most distance purchases, which shapes how an auto-buy feature can be built and explained. Those are the conditions an EU launch would land in, not predictions about when one arrives.

What Amazon has confirmed is narrow: an invite-only SMS test in the US, price monitoring across one year of history, sponsored placements free to advertisers for now, and orders synchronised across app, website and Alexa devices. It has not said how many invitations went out, when the test opens to everyone, or whether the text channel will ever reach European phone numbers.

Does the shopping agent work outside Amazon?

The features described, including reordering, delivery status, price alerts and auto-buy triggers, run on Amazon's own catalogue. Amazon's announcement does not mention support for other retailers.

Is the text channel free for customers?

Amazon has not announced any charge to shoppers for messaging the agent, and the sponsored placements are currently offered at no extra cost to advertisers.

What stops the agent from buying things I did not approve?

Auto-buy only fires on a target price the customer sets, and reorders follow a request the customer made first. Amazon has not published details about spend limits across several active triggers.
