SketchUp and Claude from Anthropic: AI Now Creates 3D Models from Natural Language

Trimble has connected the popular 3D modeler SketchUp with artificial intelligence Claude from Anthropic. The new SketchUp Connector for Claude enables generating 3D models from natural language or reference images directly in the cloud environment. Users can thus create building masses, landscapes, or furniture without deep modeling knowledge — just describe what they want, and the AI takes care of the geometry.

Claude enters the world of 3D modeling

Anthropic, the creator of conversational AI Claude, is expanding the reach of its technology into professional tools. The latest integration concerns SketchUp, one of the most widespread 3D modelers in the field of architecture, construction, and design. Thanks to the new connector, users can communicate with Claude directly within their workflow — and not only with text, but also with images.

The foundation of the connection is the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that enables large language models to directly interact with external data and applications. In practice, this means that Claude can read and edit .SKP files, verify dimensions, and iteratively adjust geometry based on user feedback. According to the Architosh server, this integration has been officially available since May 11, 2026.

What can the new connector do?

Users can create new geometry with a simple description — for example, "create a bedroom apartment measuring 4×5 meters with a built-in wardrobe and a south-facing window." Claude processes the request, builds the model in a cloud-based SketchUp session, and verifies the dimensions. In addition to text commands, reference images, sketches, photos, floor plans, or precise dimensions can be uploaded, providing the AI with context for a more accurate result.

One of the key advantages is the ability to iterate within a single chat. The connector tracks version history, so users can easily navigate between previous model variants, describe what is wrong, and have Claude make adjustments. Upon completion, the connector generates a 2D preview and a direct link to download the .SKP file, which can be further edited in the desktop, web, or mobile version of SketchUp.

Chris Cronin, vice president and general manager for architecture and design at Trimble, stated: "Traditionally, the biggest barrier to 3D modeling has been the time and learning curve required to translate ideas into digital form. Natural language commands and the power of AI are changing this — allowing anyone to get started and succeed, including inexperienced users."

How to access the integration and how much does it cost?

Getting started is fairly straightforward. The user needs an account with Anthropic Claude and a Trimble ID for authentication. In Claude's settings, under the "Customize" section and "Connect your Apps," select Trimble SketchUp from the MCP connector directory. After connecting, a free license is available with a limit of saving 30 models. For further use, a paid license must be purchased. The resulting files are compatible with SketchUp for Web, Desktop, iPad, and iPhone.

Claude's pricing policy varies by plan: basic access is free with certain limits, the Pro plan costs approximately $18–20 per month (depending on the region) and offers higher limits and access to more advanced models. SketchUp itself offers a range of subscriptions from Free (web version with limited space) through Go, Pro, to Studio. To fully utilize the AI connector, one must therefore count on a combination of both services.

Comparison with competition: who else connects AI and 3D?

The integration of AI into CAD and BIM tools is not a completely new development. Autodesk has been developing its own AI assistants for several years — for example, within the Forma platform (formerly Spacemaker) for generative design of urban districts or experimental features in Revit. Nvidia promotes its Omniverse and tools generating 3D content from text, but direct integration into mainstream modelers like SketchUp is rare at this scale.

While Autodesk has bet more on its own development and proprietary models, Trimble turned to a proven third party — Anthropic. Claude has recently established itself as a strong player in the field of agent capabilities and context handling, which clearly pays off in the environment of 3D modeling, where precise dimensions and iterations matter. Unlike generic chatbots, Claude can directly manipulate files and verify geometry through the MCP protocol.

What does this mean for Czech users?

SketchUp has long been popular in the Czech Republic, especially among architects, interior designers, and students of technical fields. The new integration with Claude can significantly simplify the creation of concepts and quick studies. However, it should be noted that Claude does not yet have official Czech localization — commands must be entered in English or another supported language. This may be a certain barrier for some Czech users, especially smaller companies without English-speaking staff.

In terms of availability, the integration is not regionally restricted — if a user has access to Claude and Trimble services, they can use it even from the Czech Republic. However, with regard to the upcoming EU AI Act and requirements for transparency for high-risk AI systems in the area of critical infrastructure and construction, we may see additional regulatory adjustments if these tools begin to be used for official project documentation.

The future of 3D modeling with AI

The combination of natural language and 3D design represents a shift toward the democratization of advanced technologies. Users do not need to master complex commands or interfaces — just describe the idea. Importantly, the output remains in the open .SKP format, which can be further edited in traditional tools. This preserves professional control over the result, while AI shortens the initial design phase.

Whether this approach will also establish itself in more demanding project phases — for example, in BIM coordination or structural calculations — depends on further development. For now, it is a powerful tool for the conceptual phase and rapid visualizations.

Do I need a paid subscription to use AI in SketchUp?

Basic use is free with a limit of 30 saved models. For further saving, a paid license is required. In addition, you need an account with Anthropic Claude, which has both free and paid versions.

Can Claude create a 3D model just from an interior photo?

Yes, you can upload a reference photo, sketches, or floor plans. However, tests show that a combination of a detailed image with precise dimensions and a text description yields the best results. A photo alone without additional context can lead to a less accurate model.

Is this feature available in Czech?

SketchUp itself has Czech localization, but the Claude AI connector currently supports primarily English and other major languages. Commands for model generation must therefore be entered in English.
