What Quality Mode Brings

Company xAI, founded by Elon Musk, on May 6, 2026 announced the launch of Quality Mode for its Grok Imagine image generator. The mode is designed primarily for enterprise developers and teams who need to generate and edit images programmatically via API. Compared to the previous version, it brings three key improvements: significantly higher realism, more precise text rendering, and better adherence to prompt instructions.

The first of the mentioned areas — realism — means that the model now better captures fine details, surface textures, and natural lighting. The second area, text rendering, has long plagued most image generators. Quality Mode promises clean and precise text rendering including support for multiple languages, which is critical for marketing materials or product visualizations. The third promised benefit, creative control, means that the model better understands more complex scene descriptions and can maintain a consistent style across multiple generations.

Strong Position on Independent Leaderboards

The quality of the new mode is confirmed by its placement on the LMArena Text-to-Image Arena, an independent leaderboard where users evaluate models in direct duels. As of May 4, 2026, the model grok-imagine-image-quality took sixth place with an overall score of 1223 ± 6. It thus surpassed competitors such as Flux 2 Max, Ideogram v3 Quality, DALL-E 3, or Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large.

The top positions on the leaderboard are currently held by OpenAI with models gpt-image-2 (1398 points) and gpt-image-1.5 (1240 points) and Google with the Gemini 3 series (1268 to 1232 points). Grok Imagine Quality Mode thus ranks among the absolute world elite and confirms that xAI can compete with the biggest players in the field of generative graphics.

For comparison: the older version of the model without Quality Mode, grok-imagine-image, is currently in 11th place with a score of 1172, while the highest version to date grok-imagine-image-pro is in 14th place with 1160 points. Quality Mode thus represents the most significant leap in quality in the history of Grok Imagine.

Technical Parameters and Availability

Quality Mode is available via xAI API at https://api.x.ai/v1/images/generations. Developers can use standard SDKs — official libraries for Python, JavaScript are supported, as well as integration via OpenAI-compatible interface. This means that companies already using DALL-E or other OpenAI models can switch to Grok with minimal code changes.

The API offers a range of configuration options. Users can choose between 1k and 2k resolution, set various aspect ratios including 16:9, 4:3, 3:2, or 9:16, and generate up to 10 images in a single request. In addition to generation from text prompt, Quality Mode also supports image editing — developers can submit up to five reference images and the model will edit them according to a verbal description. Multi-turn editing is also supported, where the output from one step serves as input for the next.

The output is standardly available as a temporary URL, or the base64 format can be requested for direct embedding into applications. Each generated image is subject to automatic content moderation, which filters inappropriate materials.

Prices and Enterprise Use

xAI uses flat per-image pricing for its image models, not the token rates known from text models. For editing, both the input image and the output result are charged. However, the company has not published exact pricing for Quality Mode — it is primarily an enterprise offer, where companies will likely learn the rates only after contacting the sales department. For Czech and European companies, this means they must request an individual quote and count on billing in USD.

xAI directly presents two main areas of enterprise use in its announcement. The first is product visualization and marketing — companies can generate photorealistic product renders, hero images for websites, icons, or advertising creative variants at scale. The second area is rapid prototyping — designers and product teams can visualize ideas within minutes and immediately share them with colleagues, without having to wait for a graphic designer or photographer.

Availability in the Czech Republic and Europe

The xAI API is accessible globally, which means that Czech companies and developers can also use Quality Mode. There are no geographic restrictions for API access. However, for EU companies, it is important to keep GDPR in mind — especially if they generate images containing personal data or store them on servers outside the European Economic Area. xAI is based in the United States and its servers likely run in American data centers, which may require data transfer assessment under standard EU-US clauses.

Czech language support in prompts is not officially confirmed, but given that the model supports multilingual text rendering, it is likely that it can process Czech descriptions. However, developers will have to verify the exact quality of Czech text in output images in practice.

The older model grok-imagine-image-pro will be gradually phased out of the offering according to xAI documentation. Developers currently using this version are recommended to migrate to the new grok-imagine-image-quality, which offers significantly higher quality and better stability.

Comparison with Competition: Where Grok Stands

The text-to-image generator market in 2026 is extremely concentrated. In addition to xAI, OpenAI operates here with DALL-E 3 and new gpt-image models, Google with Imagen and Gemini, Black Forest Labs with the Flux family, Midjourney, Ideogram, Recraft, and a number of Chinese players including models from Alibaba and Bytedance.

Grok Imagine Quality Mode with its sixth place on LMArena proves that it can compete even with the latest models from OpenAI and Google. A particular strength according to xAI is text rendering — an area where even top models have traditionally lagged behind.
