EU Tightens Machine Cybersecurity: New Certifications and AI Rewrite the Rules of Industrial Security

The European Union is introducing mandatory cybersecurity for all industrial machinery and robots starting in 2027. In parallel, the first certification courses for humanoid robotics specialists are emerging, and technology giants such as NVIDIA and Accenture are developing AI systems that can stop a robot in real time when it endangers a human. What do these changes mean for Czech manufacturers, employees, and workplace safety?

A New Era of Industrial Safety: Cybersecurity and Physical Protection Under One Roof

Starting in 2027, EU Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 comes into effect, fundamentally changing the rules of the game for all manufacturers and operators of industrial equipment in Europe. It will no longer be enough for a machine to be mechanically safe — manufacturers will also have to ensure its cyber resilience. This means protecting safety data and control systems from tampering, regularly updating software, and securing remote access.

The technical standard against which machine cybersecurity will be measured is the international standard IEC 62443. It defines requirements for secure control systems, network segmentation, and protection of operational technology (OT). For Czech manufacturers, this means a concrete investment item — implementing the IEC 62443 standard requires not only technical modifications but also staff training and regular security audits.

When Computer Vision Stops a Robot: The Belden, Accenture, and NVIDIA Project

While the EU pushes cybersecurity on paper, concrete technological solutions are being developed in the field. Companies Belden, Accenture, and NVIDIA are jointly developing a safety system that uses computer vision and artificial intelligence to detect dangerous situations in real time and stop the robot immediately.

The key technology is Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) — network synchronization that enables coordination in the order of microseconds. That is, fast enough for the robot to react before an injury occurs. A pilot project with one of the automotive manufacturers launches as early as September 2026. If proven successful, it will open the door to deploying similar systems in other sectors — from logistics through food processing to heavy industry.

The reason these systems matter is supported by Swiss accident data: between 2015 and 2024, forklifts caused 14 fatalities and 126 permanent disabilities. The most common causes are forklift overturns and collisions with pedestrians. According to Swiss standard EKAS 6518, operators must complete four days of training plus on-site instruction at the specific workplace.

Humanoid Robotics Enters the Classroom: The First Certification Course in Europe

Germany's IHK Reutlingen Chamber of Industry and Commerce is launching the very first "Humanoid Robotics Specialist" certification course in November 2026. Ten modules cover robotic technologies, AI deployment, legal and safety issues, and economic operational efficiency.

This is a signal that humanoid robots are no longer a laboratory curiosity and are beginning to make their mark in real industry. For Czech companies struggling with a shortage of qualified workers, such courses provide inspiration — their own certification programs could be created in collaboration with Czech chambers of commerce as well.

Billions into Training Centers: Companies Respond to Massive Workforce Exodus

The labor shortage is pushing European companies to invest tens of millions of euros in training infrastructure. Energy company Mainova in Frankfurt is expanding its training center from 2,800 to 7,700 square meters — an investment in the high tens of millions of euros will create capacity for 100 additional apprentices per year. In Burgenland, Saxony-Anhalt, a new crisis center is being built for 15.4 million euros, including a training area with a fire pit and tunnel installations for realistic simulations.

The numbers are relentless: according to estimates, approximately 6.5 million people will leave the German labor market by 2030. Around 54,000 apprenticeship positions remain unfilled annually, and the early dropout rate from apprenticeships hovers around 25 percent. The Azubi Report 2025/26 survey also shows what young workers prioritize: 75 percent job security, 70 percent work-life balance.

The Market for Safety Training Technologies Is Skyrocketing

Increasing regulatory pressure and labor shortages are creating strong demand for technology-supported training tools. In 2023, there were 91 providers of these solutions in Germany; by 2026, there are already 194 — more than double. The market is driven by a combination of demographic trends, stricter standards, and the rise of AI in industrial safety.

This represents an opportunity for Czech technology companies. The Czech Republic has a strong engineering tradition and a growing AI sector — developing software tools for simulating safety scenarios, training platforms with augmented reality elements, or computer vision systems for industrial environments are areas where Czech developers could find opportunities.

What It Means for the Czech Republic: From Regulation to Opportunity

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 is crucial for the Czech Republic as an industrial country with a high share of mechanical engineering. Czech machinery and equipment manufacturers — from small family businesses to large exporters — will have to ensure compliance with the new cybersecurity requirements by 2027. This involves not only technical product modifications but also documentation, certification, and employee training.

At the same time, it is an opportunity. Companies that manage to implement the new standards quickly and effectively will gain a competitive advantage in the European market. And demand for AI and robotics safety experts — whether as certified specialists, safety engineers, or training system developers — will only grow in the coming years.

When exactly does the new EU regulation on machine cybersecurity take effect?

Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 comes into full effect in 2027. Manufacturers have until then to adapt their products to the new requirements, which include securing control systems, regular software updates, and protection against cyberattacks.

Do the changes also affect small Czech machinery manufacturers?

Yes, the regulation applies to all manufacturers of machinery placed on the European market, regardless of company size. The scope of requirements varies according to the machine's risk category, but no manufacturer is exempt from the cybersecurity obligation. Smaller companies can get help with implementation through European advisory services or national associations.

How is computer vision related to robot workplace safety?

Computer vision enables camera systems to recognize people and objects in the robot's vicinity in real time. Combined with TSN (Time-Sensitive Networking) technology, the system can assess collision risk and stop the robot within microseconds — before an injury could occur. This is a fundamental shift compared to traditional cage or laser safety barriers.
