Claude Learns to Speak the Language of Lawyers
According to Anthropic, lawyers have become the most active users of Claude Cowork among all knowledge professions. This gave the company a clear signal on where to direct development. The result is a suite of tools that covers virtually the entire lifecycle of legal work — from initial research through contract drafting to due diligence in mergers and acquisitions.
The foundation consists of MCP connectors (Model Context Protocol) — an open standard that connects Claude with external systems and data. Unlike closed API integrations, it allows firms to customize the connection precisely according to their own processes and security policies.
20+ Connectors: From Contracts to Data Rooms
The new connectors span the entire legal technology stack. In the area of contract management, Anthropic integrated Docusign (access to agreement data, key terms such as renewal dates), Definely (structural contract analysis, cross-reference validation) and Ironclad (searching contract repositories in natural language).
For transactional law, connectors for Box and Datasite were added — the latter connects Claude directly with virtual data rooms, where thousands of M&A transactions take place annually. Claude can establish folder structures, invite users, search documents, and monitor buyer Q&A processes within them.
In document management, these are iManage and NetDocuments — both with full respect for access rights and governance policies. For e-discovery, then Consilio, Everlaw, and Relativity — Claude can stand at the birth of a matter, set up workspace schema, manage access, and analyze data.
Legal Research Gets a New Dimension
Fundamental is the connection to Thomson Reuters CoCounsel Legal — a fiduciary-grade system for end-to-end drafting, research, review, and validation across major legal areas. Claude draws from the Westlaw database, Practical Law guides, the KeyCite tool, and the client's own documents.
For European lawyers, the Legal Data Hunter connector is significant, giving Claude access to more than 31 million documents from 160+ jurisdictions including consolidated EU law, constitutional court case law, and official doctrine. This is fundamental for Czech and European law firms that work with European legislation.
Other research connectors include Midpage (case law with hyperlinked sources for easy verification), Trellis (the largest database of state court decisions in the USA) and Descrybe (conceptual case law search).
12 Plugins for Every Specialization
Anthropic understood that a corporate lawyer works differently than a litigator or IP specialist. Therefore, it is introducing 12 practice-specific plugins, available open-source on GitHub:
- Commercial Legal — review of vendor contracts and NDAs against internal playbooks, escalation in plain language for business stakeholders
- Corporate Legal — M&A due diligence across the data room, disclosure schedules, board consents, closing checklists
- Employment Legal — hiring, terminations, worker classifications, vacation deadlines, internal investigations
- Privacy Legal — DPA review against playbook, triage of PIA/DPIA, DSAR responses within statutory deadlines, uncovering conflicts between written policy and practice
- Product Legal — launch review, verification of marketing claims, responses to risk questions from business
- Regulatory Legal — monitoring regulatory changes, filtering by materiality, comparing new rules with existing policies
- AI Governance Legal — triage of AI use cases by governance tiers, impact assessments, review of AI vendor terms
- IP Legal — trademark clearance, freedom-to-operate analysis, cease-and-desist letters, DMCA takedowns, open-source compliance
- Litigation Legal — management of dispute portfolio, legal holds, subpoenas, chronologies, deposition preparation, privilege logs
- Law Student — Socratic drilling, case briefs, IRAC evaluation, bar preparation with jurisdictional differences
- Legal Clinic — management of client intake, deadline tracking, case memos, queue for supervisory review
- Legal Builder Hub — search and installation of community legal skills from public registries with security review
Each plugin begins with a brief setup conversation, during which it learns the specifics of the given practice — playbook, escalation chain, risk calibration, and house style. The outputs thus correspond to the standards of the specific firm, not generic templates.
Integration with Microsoft 365: Law Directly in Documents
Claude now works directly in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint — and crucially, it carries context across all four applications. A redline completed in Word does not need to be explained again when it becomes a cover note in Outlook, a closing checklist in Excel, or a board summary in PowerPoint.
In Word, Claude skills — reusable instructions encoding team standards — handle drafting, redlining, comparing clauses against playbooks, tracking changes, and explaining reasons for adjustments. In Outlook, it triages incoming matters: flags contract requests, drafts responses, and schedules follow-ups.
Built on Opus 4.7: The Most Capable Model for Law
All new features are built on the Claude Opus 4.7 model, which achieved a score of 90.9% on the specialized Harvey BigLaw Bench benchmark — the highest of all Claude models. The test includes complex legal tasks requiring multi-step reasoning over extensive documents.
The company Eve, which evaluates models against 24+ legal-specific metrics including citation accuracy, detection of hallucinated case law, and correctness of refusal, stated that "Claude wins our internal bake-offs every time, especially in grounding and citation fidelity metrics."
The law firm Freshfields is building proprietary AI solutions on Claude within Freshfields Lab and is co-developing agentic workflows for multi-step legal tasks with Anthropic. Accenture has deployed Claude for everyday legal agenda and reports measurable productivity increases. Holland & Knight applies Claude across litigation workflows.
Democratization of Access to Law
A significant part of the announcement is partnerships with organizations such as Free Law Project, Justice Technology Association, Courtroom5, and BoardWise. Qualified legal clinics, public defenders, and nonprofit legal organizations will receive significantly discounted access through the Claude for Nonprofits program.
Courtroom5, a tool for roughly 80% of civil litigants in the USA who stand before court without a lawyer, now offers jurisdiction-specific case intake, deadline calculations, and guidance on next steps in all 50 US states through an MCP connector. "Most people don't even know they have a legal claim until it's too late. Claude can now reach them at the moment when they are scared and looking for answers," says Sonja Ebron, CEO of Courtroom5.
What This Means for the Czech Legal Environment
For Czech law firms and in-house counsel, this expansion is relevant for several reasons. First, the Legal Data Hunter connector covers consolidated EU law — this is key for every firm that works with European legislation and regulations. Second, Claude supports Czech and can work with Czech legal texts, although specialized Czech legal databases (ASPI, Beck-online) do not yet have a direct MCP connector.
The EU AI Act, which from February 2026 introduces new obligations for AI deployment, is another area where the AI Governance Legal plugin can help — it can triage AI use cases by governance tiers, conduct impact assessments, and check compliance with regulatory requirements. For companies that must demonstrate compliance with the AI Act, this is a practical tool.
The open-source nature of connectors and plugins also means that Czech technology companies and legal innovators can create their own integrations tailored to the Czech market.
Is Claude for lawyers available in Czech?
Yes, Claude supports Czech and can work with Czech legal texts. The quality of outputs in Czech is high, although for highly specialized formulations we recommend checking the outputs. Specialized Czech legal databases (ASPI, Beck-online) do not yet have a direct MCP connector, but thanks to the open MCP protocol it is possible to create connectors.
How much does Claude cost for legal teams?
Claude Cowork with access to connectors and plugins is part of Anthropic's enterprise plans. The specific price depends on team size and deployment scope — for an exact calculation, it is necessary to contact the sales team via claude.com/contact-sales. Nonprofit legal organizations are eligible for significantly discounted access through the Claude for Nonprofits program.
How does Claude differ from specialized legal AI like Harvey or CoCounsel?
Claude is not direct competition to these tools — on the contrary, it cooperates with them. Both Harvey and Thomson Reuters CoCounsel are now available as MCP connectors inside Claude. This means that a lawyer can use both the general capabilities of Claude (e.g., document summarization or drafting emails in Outlook) and specialized legal functions of Harvey or CoCounsel in one interface. It is an ecosystem approach, not "everything in one".
